Hair Porosity....What's that ?

Hey Curlfriend,

There is so much talk around hair porosity but if you like myself weren't always aware of your hairs porosity, here are a few indicators to help below.

Low Porosity Hair

My hair has difficulty absorbing water/product and retaining moisture. My hair dries very slowly. I experience chronic dryness and am easily prone to breakage due to brittle hair and ends. Typically type 4 hair : 4A, 4B or 4C tight curls and coils.

Medium Porosity Hair

My hair absorbs water/product and seems to retain moisture pretty well.
My hair doesn't require a lot of maintenance. Hair types will vary.

High Porosity Hair

My hair has little to no difficulty absorbing water/product but does not retain moisture. My hair dries very fast. I experience breakage due to frizz, weak strands and tangling. Typically type 3 hair : 3A, 3B, or 3C loose waves and curls.

Keep in mind some curlfriends have combination hair types. The best way to determine your hair porosity is to do a strand test.

Simply fill a cup with room temperature water. Now take a few strands of hair from your comb or brush and place them in the cup. Now observe the results.

  • If your stands float to the top you have low porosity hair.
  • If your strands are in the middle, and then seem to VERY slowly sink to the bottom you have medium porosity hair.
  • If your strands sink to the bottom you have high porosity hair.
